Riding to Idyllwild with DROC
Idyllwild sits in the San Jacinto Mountains, and the way DROC gets there is the point: Ortega Highway east, down through Anza on CA-371, a stop at the Paradise Valley Cafe, then the climb up CA-243 into the pines.
It is roughly a 188-mile loop and one of the best full days available from Orange County. We have run it four times.
The road itself

Two roads make Idyllwild. Highway 243, the Banning to Idyllwild road, is the tight technical one, climbing hard out of the pass through pine forest. Highway 74, the Palms to Pines Highway, is the open fast one running east toward the desert and Palm Desert.
Half of the 243 is shut. As of August 2026 it is open from Idyllwild south to Lake Fulmor, but the section from Lake Fulmor down to Banning remains under repair with no estimated reopening. So the classic climb up from the pass is off the table for now, and the way in is from Hemet on the 74 or from the desert side.
The 74 through Mountain Center is the constant: open, fast and one of the best surfaces in the region. It is also how you reach Paradise Valley Cafe at the 74 and 371 junction, which opens at 8am, is properly biker-friendly and is the default DROC stop out here.
How DROC rides it
- CA-243 is tight, technical and often has gravel washed onto it. It is not a road to hurry.
- Paradise Valley Cafe is the traditional stop and it is busy with bikes on weekends.
- Lunch in Idyllwild, then the loop back rather than retracing. Full day, plan for it.
- The 243 does not currently run through to Banning. Lake Fulmor to Banning is closed with no reopening date. Route in via Hemet.
- It gets cold and it gets snow. Idyllwild is at 5,400 feet. Winter rides need checking the morning of.
- Paradise Valley Cafe fills up. Get there early on a weekend or expect to wait for a table.

Route plans
These are the actual route plans DROC has used, with the map for each. Ride leaders pick from these rather than inventing a route every time, which is why the same roads come up again: they work. Nothing stops you riding them on your own.

Ride it with us
Every DROC ride runs the same way: a safety briefing before we roll, staggered formation, a lead and a sweep, and regroups at every junction that matters. The full ground rules and the hand-signal guide are on the rides page.
