Riding Ortega Highway with DROC
Ortega Highway, California State Route 74, runs from San Juan Capistrano over the Santa Ana Mountains to Lake Elsinore. It is the closest real motorcycling road to most of Orange County, and it is the road DROC has ridden more than any other: 36 club rides since 2018.
It is also the road that punishes complacency. Ortega is heavily patrolled, the surface changes through the seasons, and the blind decreasing-radius corners on the descent catch out riders who have only seen the first few miles. We ride it often precisely because it rewards knowing it well.
How DROC rides it
- Most Ortega rides meet at the Shell or Starbucks at the bottom of the hill in San Juan Capistrano, fill up there, and run a safety briefing before rolling out.
- We ride in staggered formation with a lead and a sweep, and regroup at the top. Nobody is expected to keep up. The sweep stays behind the last rider.
- Ortega is usually the first leg rather than the destination. It links to Lake Elsinore, Temecula and MotoDoffo, and on longer days to Palomar, Julian and Borrego Springs.

Route plans
These are the actual route plans DROC has used, with the map for each. Ride leaders pick from these rather than inventing a route every time, which is why the same roads come up again: they work. Nothing stops you riding them on your own.
| Route | Length | Hours | Last ridden | Map |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ortega extended, hard offroad | Half day | April 2026 | Route |
Last ridden is the most recent DROC ride over Ortega, Long Ride to Borrego Springs April 2026, which starts from the Ortega meetup. The route library has no date against the hard off-road extension specifically.
Ride it with us
Every DROC ride runs the same way: a safety briefing before we roll, staggered formation, a lead and a sweep, and regroups at every junction that matters. The full ground rules and the hand-signal guide are on the rides page.
