DROC track days at Streets of Willow

Streets of Willow, at the Willow Springs complex in Rosamond, is the smaller and more technical of the circuits DROC visits. It is the one we send first-timers to.

Speeds are lower than Buttonwillow or Chuckwalla and the corners come quickly, which makes it a good place for a first track day. You spend the day working on lines rather than holding on.

The smaller, more technical circuit at the Willow Springs complex: fourteen turns, run clockwise. The numbering and the two names, The Bowl at 8 and The Kink at 9, are from California Superbike School’s map of the course, and our own corner detection independently finds fourteen with the north hairpin on 8. OpenStreetMap records the venue as a closed ring plus a branch that stands in for one arc of it; composed, the lap measures 1.56 miles, which matches the 1.6-mile course Willow Springs publish. Superbike School’s map of the same course says 1.8 miles. Turn numbers are ours, worked out from the geometry rather than taken from the circuit, so tell us if they differ from the numbering used at the track. 1.6 miles, 14 turns. Willow Springs list it as a 1.6-mile road course with a skid pad. California Superbike School’s map of the same course says 1.8 miles and numbers the fourteen turns, which is where the numbers on our drawing come from. The two corners everyone names are The Bowl, turn 8, the long loop at the far end of the back straight, and The Kink, turn 9, the quick left as you come back. Turn 1 sits at the end of the front straight, and the lap runs clockwise.

What a day here looks like

  • Tech inspection early, riders’ meeting, then sessions by group through the day.
  • The desert setting means it can be cold in the morning and hot by afternoon in the same session list. Layer.
  • It is also where DROC has run minibike clinics, which is a genuinely useful way to learn track craft on a small bike first.
